If you know the difference between P and NP,
and the difference between offsides and icing; if you can properly
pronounce Dijkstra and Jagr, Euler and Roy -- this is the page for

TOC Hockey NEWS
Game Over!
Our intrepid theoreticians put forth a mighty effort, and kept the score
tied for most of the game. But they couldn't overcome a late-in-the-third
push by the architects. The final score was Practice 6, Theory 4.
Here are some pictures of the game.
Here is
another set of pictures.
Thanks to all the wonderful fans who showed up to cheer on the team (i.e.,
Valerie and Alan, and another who's name I didn't catch).
A grand time was held by all, and there is serious talk of doing this again
at FOCS (Providence -- we could play against the Brown CS team) or at
STOC (Victoria -- nuff said).
If you would like to be on the mailing list, please send a note to
ccm at cs dot amherst dot edu, or fill out the form at the bottom
of this page.
Game On!
The Theory vs Practice hockey game will take place as follows:
- Date and Time: 11:30pm Monday, June 11th.
- Location: Icetown UTC, 4545 La Jolla Village Dr., San Diego CA 92122, (858) 452-9110. Directions at
www.cc.gatech.edu/~loh/fcrc2007-hockey.
- We get 1:15 of ice time, to be used as follows: 6 minute warmup, 3*20
minute runtime periods, 2*2 minute intermission, 5 minutes at the end for
awards and photos, and a possible shootout. We will start promptly:
please show up at the rink by 10:45 to dress and stretch, and figure out our
lines. Bring a few pucks for warmups. STOC/Theory players should bring
white jerseys.
- If you want to join the carpool, send email to Gabe Loh,
with information about: (A) how many people you can give a ride to;
(B) you need a ride; (C) where you are staying (especially if it is not
the conference hotel). Mail To: loh@cc.gatech.edu
- STOC players: Maggs, Walker, Grossman,
Hartline, Viz, Batu, Sami, and friends. Visit the
TOC Players Page for a scouting report.
- ISCA players: Wood, Beckmann, Chong, Abonesi, Zilles, August, Loh,
Sherwood, maybe Kaeli, Shilaing.
- I (Cathy) will bring two sticks, a righty (for Tugkan) and a lefty
(for Elias). Let me know quickly if more are needed.
I have purchased a cup to serve as a prize -- the
cup will be unveiled at the STOC welcome reception.
- Elias cannot bring his equipment. What can you bring to share?

The computer architecture community (which attends ISCA) has challenged
the theory community (attending STOC) to a ``friendly inter-league'' hockey
game, to be held at
FCRC in San Diego, June 8-16!
The invitation has been extended by Prof. Gabriel Loh, of Georgia Tech.
Visit
this site for some information about the competition.
Note they are billing this as``Theory vs Practice.''
They will book the ice and make travel arrangements. Here are some
details:
- Full-ish equpiment: skates, helmet, gloves, shin guards, and
pelvic protector (for guys) required; other equipment depends upon your
pain threshold.
- Absolutely no checking.
- Lifting the puck allowed. Slapshots allowed if there is no one
between you and the goalie. (Gabe points out that slapshots are therefore
unheard of, since if there is no one between you and the goalie you will
likely skate it in and try that cool move from last night's OT shootout.)
- Costs (for ice, bus to rink, and maybe even jerseys) will be split
among the players, of course. Our hosts will pester industry connections for
sponsorship, and we are encouraged to do likewise.
- I'm looking into building up a stick pool so people don't have
to travel with sticks. Note that many airlines consider
an equipment bag plus sticks (two pieces, you can tape the sticks together)
to be equivalent to one carry-on bag. See for example the
American Airlines policy or the
Northwest policy. (You might want to print this out and take it with
you in case the check-in agent balks.)
- With the above (red) disclaimer, ACM feels ok about putting a link to this
site on the STOC page. Now we can't sue them.
If you are a ToC member, or a friend of a ToC
member, or an interested ringer (I'm thinking Spearchucker Jones
from the M.A.S.H movie), and you can play at FCRC, please sign up
using the form below. It would be helpful, but not strictly necessary,
for you to know how to skate. You will be placed on the mailing list
to receive more information.
Please fill out the form before you get a look at the competition, by
visiting
www.cc.gatech.edu/~loh/isca2006-hockey/ and
www.cs.wisc.edu/~isca2005/hockey.html. Also please visit the
(growing) list of ToC hockey players.
The honor of the Theory of Computing community rests in your gloves.
